The Precision Twist R53OH long-length, through-coolant drill bit is a notched point, general-purpose round shank made of HSS with an uncoated finish. It is suitable for drilling to a depth up to six times the diameter of the drill. Good for portable or machine drilling. The shank diameter is the same as the drill size. It was designed for drilling holes into a wide variety of metals and synthetic materials. With a through-coolant system, there are different ways to get coolant through the drill bit. As the coolant flows through the coolant holes, it flushes chips (also known as swarf) away from the cutting zone and moves them along the drill flutes until they exit the hole. The key factors are coolant volume and pressure. The benefits of providing coolant internally directly to the cutting edge include higher cutting speeds, higher feed rates, longer tools life, less frequently sharpening and a superior finish. The coolant assists in clearing the chips from the cutting edge and the pressure forces the swarf along the lines of the flutes, which allow for drilling greater depths without repeated withdrawal of the drill to clear swarf. Higher than normal speeds and feeds are needed to help ensure that chips curl and break, instead of form long strings. The R53OH series has a 34-degree helix angle and has best performance drilling into steel, cast iron, copper, or aluminum magnesium. The uncoated finish helps keep costs down, while providing acceptable performance in most situations. The finish helps increase chip flow in soft materials. Drilling, or hole making, is the most common metalworking operation in the world. Twist drill bits are the most common type of drill bit used.
